Northern Lights Festival Boreal Announces Winners of 2026 Meltdown Competition
Sudbury, ON — The Northern Lights Festival Boréal (NLFB) is proud to announce the winners of its 2026 Meltdown Competition, celebrating emerging musical talent from across Northern Ontario and beyond. This year’s competition showcased an impressive range of artists, culminating in two standout winners in the Solo/Duo and Band/Ensemble categories.
Taking top honours in the Solo/Duo category is Briar Summers, a Huntsville, Ontario–born songwriter and pianist currently based in Sudbury while pursuing a degree in medicine. Briar’s music reflects her belief that the arts are essential to overall well-being. Blending elements of pop, rock, folk, and dance, her songwriting is rooted in storytelling and delivered with a captivating, engaging presence that resonated strongly with judges and audiences alike.
Winning the Band/Ensemble category is the Golden Scoundrels from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Formed in 2024, this dynamic quartet delivers a rugged mix of country and folk music. Built on strong melodies and vivid storytelling, their sound is gritty, honest, and unmistakably road-ready — qualities that set them apart throughout the competition.
“The Meltdown Competition continues to highlight the incredible depth of talent in Northern Ontario,” said Michelle Murray, the festival’s Executive Director. “Both Briar Summers and Golden Scoundrels exemplify the authenticity, creativity, and passion that define this region’s music scene.”
As winners, both artists will receive studio time donated by Deadpan Studios and a coveted spot on the festival stage this summer.
The Northern Lights Festival Boreal remains committed to fostering emerging artists and providing a platform for new voices to be heard.
